How to Be on Time

Orange-and-navy Cheat Code for Young Men graphic, How to Be on Time, showing an alarm clock and a plan-ahead checklist.

Being on time is about more than watching a clock. It’s about responsibility, respect, and keeping your word. When you agree to be somewhere at a certain time, you’ve made a commitment. Being late tells others they can’t always count on you, and that can cost you opportunities, whether it’s a job, an interview, or even a relationship.

But there’s a difference between being on time and being early. Being on time means you’re ready when you’re expected. Being early gives you time to get ready. It allows you to gather your thoughts, get organized, and handle something unexpected without making everyone else wait.

Here’s how to make that happen. If work starts at 8:00 AM and it’s a 20-minute drive, don’t leave at 7:40. That would put you in the parking lot at exactly 8:00, and you’re already behind. Instead, add ten minutes to your travel time. Leave at 7:30, arrive around 7:50, and give yourself time to walk inside, put your things away, and be ready to work at 8:00.

It’s a simple habit, but people notice. Employers notice. Coaches notice. And people learn they can depend on you.

Today’s Cheat Code: Pick one commitment you have tomorrow. Work backward from the time you’re expected, add ten minutes to your travel time, and set an alarm for when you need to leave. Practice arriving early and being ready on time.
