Filling out a job application is a good first step, but sometimes getting noticed takes a little follow through. Here’s how we do it. First, write down the name of the business and the date you applied. Second, give them about three to five business days to review applications. Third, call during a time when the business isn’t likely to be busy. When someone answers, introduce yourself and explain why you’re calling. For example, “Good morning, my name is Jake. I submitted an application for the stocking position last Thursday, and I wanted to follow up to see if you’re still interviewing for that position.” If they say they’re still reviewing applications, simply ask, “When would be a good time for me to check back?” Write down their answer, thank them for their time, and follow through when you said you would. If they tell you the position has been filled, thank them anyway. You never know when another opportunity might open up. The important thing is learning how to take initiative without being pushy.
