You went to the interview, answered their questions, shook hands, and walked out feeling pretty good about it. Now what? Do you just sit around waiting for the phone to ring? Not necessarily. Here’s how we handle it. First, before leaving the interview, ask when they expect to make a hiring decision. Second, within 24 hours, send a short thank you email if you have the interviewer’s contact information. Something as simple as, “Thank you for taking the time to meet with me yesterday. I enjoyed learning more about the position and appreciate the opportunity.” Third, write down the date they said they would make a decision. If that date passes and you haven’t heard anything, give them a business day or two, then make one polite follow up call or send an email. For example, “Good morning, this is Jake Williams. I interviewed for the stocking position last Tuesday, and I wanted to check whether a hiring decision has been made.” If they’re still interviewing, thank them and ask when would be a good time to check back. If they chose someone else, thank them anyway. You never know when another opportunity might open up. The goal isn’t to pressure somebody into hiring you. It’s to show genuine interest, communicate professionally, and follow through.
